From a Family’s Need to a 55 Year Legacy: The Story of Jade Alarm Co.
Electronic Security Association — November 5, 2024

As an industry, we’ve continually pivoted to address the ever-changing security demands and increasing vulnerabilities of the companies and homeowners we serve. Innovative technologies continue to emerge to help tackle the myriad security and life safety challenges of our times.

Origins and Early Days

In 1969, David and Lillian Pfefer were operating their parking lot business across from the old Municipal Stadium when their lives took an unexpected turn. An intruder tried to force open the front door of their home, setting off a chain of events that led to the birth of Jade Alarm Co.

After the incident, their eldest son, Joseph, took it upon himself to address his parents’ security concerns. With electronics as his hobby, Joe, together with his three brothers, designed and installed the first Jade Alarm Co. system at their parents’ home. This primitive yet effective system marked the beginning of what would become a thriving business.

Early Successes

Jade Alarm Co. got its first big break when Joe was asked to install a security system for Harold Eisen of Harold’s Formal Wear. Following a successful installation, Joe went on to install a system for Arrend-Miller Pharmaceutical Supply Co., which was later approved by the DEA. By 1977, Jade Alarm Co. had won a bid to install the security system for the Swope Parkway Bank Building, leading to the creation of their own central monitoring station.

Growth and Expansion

The company grew rapidly, moving from David and Lillian’s kitchen to a dedicated space in their garage, and eventually to their current facility at 7636 Troost Avenue, purchased from Harold Eisen in 1981. This move required extensive renovations to meet Underwriter Laboratories (UL) certification requirements.

Over the years, Jade Alarm Co. continued to innovate, becoming the first company in their area to computerize operations and install radio alarm networks. Despite facing significant challenges, including the tragic murder of David Pfefer in 1987 and a fire in 1988, the company persevered, driven by the values instilled by David and Lillian.

Innovations and Milestones

One of Jade Alarm Co.’s most notable advancements is the FireNet system, designed to enhance fire protection while reducing costs. FireNet leverages wireless technology, moving away from traditional wired systems and regular dial-up phone lines, which are becoming obsolete. This system ensures continuous fire protection by using private frequencies to transmit alarm signals, meeting stringent NFPA-72 9th Edition fire codes, and obtaining U.L. Certification.

Commitment to Customer Service

President Joe Pfefer attributes the company’s success to its unwavering dedication to customer service, stating, “The customer may not always be right, BUT they are always the CUSTOMER, and should be treated with respect. Always respect and care.”

Jade Alarm Co. is proud to be an ESA member, benefiting from access to a wide range of resources and a strong professional network. Being part of ESA has enabled them to stay at the forefront of industry advancements and continue their tradition of excellence in electronic security.
