The funding will give local school districts the ability to purchase, install, and maintain school security equipment.Congress provided an additional $75 million to the Department of Justice under the Comprehensive School Safety Initiative. This new program will help to ensure school safety, as well as provide aid to investigate motives for school shootings. ESA has consistently urged Congress to provide aid to local school districts who wish to secure students and faculty. In June 2013, the association released its “Electronic Security Guidelines for Schools,†which outlines planning and other actions that can be undertaken at the local level to enhance the security of schools and other educational facilities. Those guidelines are available on ESA’s website at www.ESAweb.org/schoolsecurity.”We are glad to see Congress include these funding provisions in the Consolidated Appropriations Act,†said ESA Government Relations Director John Chwat, “and we will urge Congress to continue to secure these funding levels for the 2015 fiscal year. We must do everything we can to ensure school safety for our children.†The president will present his budget for the 2015 fiscal year to Congress during the first week in March.
