2016 Graduate from Easton, CT Wins Security Industry National Scholarship Katherine Waugh Takes First Place in ESA Youth Scholarship Program Irving, Texas (June 21, 2016) —Katherine Waugh has been awarded the top prize of the Electronic Security Association (ESA) Youth Scholarship Program (YSP), receiving a $8,500 scholarship for her academic and extracurricular achievements, essay submission, and commitment to her community. Katherine was honored during the Public Safety Luncheon held at ESX on June 9 at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, TX. “The first responders that dedicate their lives to serving our communities are an inspiration to the security and life safety industry,†says YSP Task Force Chair Kelly Bond. “ESA is proud to support these men and women who sacrifice so much each day by offering the scholarship program. Awarding their children, who show such promise and dedication, is one of the ways ESA and our chartered chapters can thank police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be between 15 and 20 years old, a graduating high school senior and have been accepted for admission to an accredited college, university or, beginning in 2017, an accredited trade or vocational school. Each eligible student must have a father, mother or natural guardian who is an active duty police officer, firefighter, paramedic, or EMT (public sector). As a part of the application, students are required to write an essay entitled, “What it means to me to have my parent or guardian involved in securing our community.†17 ESA chartered chapters participated in the Youth Scholarship Program, with the first place winner of each chapter going on for consideration at the national level. Waugh won the top prize from the Connecticut Alarm & Systems Integrators Association (CASIA) and continued this winning streak to capture the national award. Steven Waugh, Katherine’s father, is Chief of the Easton Volunteer Fire Company #1 in Easton, CT where he notably battled Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the “second-costliest hurricane in United States history.†Katherine’s full essay can be read online at the link below but here is an excerpt from the winning essay: “It is Monday, October 29th, 2016 at 6:00 pm,†begins Katherine. “Hurricane Sandy has just slammed the East Coast, including my small, heavily-wooded town of Easton, CT. My dad, then the Assistant Chief of Easton’s Volunteer Fire Department, left hours ago on the first fire call and hasn’t been home since. The power is out, and my family is gathered around the kitchen table, praying. We receive a phone call. One of the firefighters is dead. No one knows who. We are suspended in disbelief. We sit at the kitchen table, stare blankly, say prayers, try to hold onto optimism.†Waugh is a 2016 graduate of Joel Barlow High School where she held a cumulative 4.415 GPA and participated in multiple advanced placement courses such as AP Physics, AP Spanish and AP Calculus. In addition to her academics, she excelled in numerous extracurricular activities such as vice president of Class Council, varsity soccer goalkeeper, secretary of the National Honor Society, officer of Modern Music Masters Honor Society, JBHS Select Choir, A Cappella Academy participant, and team captain of Physics Olympics. She is also a frequent national anthem singer, performer for various benefit concerts and holds the position of Junior Deacon at her church, Greenfield Hill Congressional Church.
