Knowing Our Industry

Knowing Our Industry

Spend enough time in the electronic security and life safety industry, and you’ll hear the same conversations over and over.

“Business is strong.”

“Margins are getting tighter.”

“It’s impossible to find good technicians.”

“Cloud adoption is accelerating.”

“AI is changing everything.”

Some of these statements are probably true. Some are true for certain markets but not others. And some have become accepted simply because we’ve heard them repeated enough times.

The question is: Do we actually know?

For years, our industry has relied on experience, instinct, and conversations with peers to understand where the market is heading. Those perspectives matter. They’re built on years of operating businesses, solving customer challenges, and adapting to change.

But anecdotal evidence has its limits. What one integrator experiences in the Northeast may look completely different from what’s happening in Texas, California, or the Midwest. A manufacturer may see demand increase while dealers feel pressure on profitability. One market may be hiring aggressively while another struggles to fill open positions.

Without objective data, it’s difficult to separate broad industry trends from individual experiences.

That’s why the Electronic Security Association launched the ESA Industry Research Center.

Its purpose isn’t to replace the experience of industry professionals. It’s to validate it, challenge it when necessary, and provide the kind of market intelligence that helps business leaders make more informed decisions.

The new Industry Performance Index is an important step in that direction.

Rather than relying on assumptions or isolated success stories, the Index will provide an ongoing view of the economic health of the electronic security and life safety industry. It will help answer questions like:

  • Is business actually growing?
  • Are market conditions improving or slowing?
  • Are the challenges you’re facing unique—or shared across the industry?
  • Are the trends everyone is talking about reflected in the data?

Sometimes the numbers will confirm what many of us already believe, or sometimes they’ll tell a very different story, but at the end of the day, both outcomes are valuable.

The strongest businesses don’t make decisions based solely on what they hear or read on social media or discuss over dinner with industry colleagues. They combine experience with credible data.

That’s the goal of the ESA Industry Research Center: to give our industry something it has never had before: a consistent, reliable way to measure where we’ve been, where we are today, and where we may be headed next.
