Do I need to renew my ESA certification if my state doesn’t require me too? Why should I? Maintaining your ESA Certification(s) will help you to continuously develop your skills and knowledge and to maintain a competitive edge. Keeping your certification active will prevent you from having to retake foundational courses and focus on learning new skills and concepts.
NTS sends out reminder emails to notify you when it is time to renew your certification. You can also log into your learner profile to check the status of your ESA Certifications.
Click here for the Certification Renewal Form. It outlines the renewal process and provides pricing information.
Education or activities covering the electronic life safety, security and systems integration industry are eligible for NTS CEUs. Please note that proper evidence of training or activity must be submitted in order for the CEUs to be accepted.
Other activities such as instruction and volunteering must be submitted with a letter (on letter head) from the entity that hosted the activity. For example, for service on a committee to be approved, the certification holder must provide a letter from the organization that confirms committee participation.
Please see Qualifying Activities for more information.
All ESA certifications are valid for a period of 24 months following the completion of a course of study. Certification is maintained through attendance at industry related continuing education activities. Maintaining ESA certifications requires certificate holders to earn 24 continuing education units/hours (CEUs) (the equivalent of 24 classroom hours) each renewal cycle.
There are several places you can look to find out when your ESA Certification(s) expire. The expiry date is shown on your certificate, which you can view in your learning portal.
You may access your profile by logging into the ESA Learning Portal site to obtain copies of your course completions and certifications.
Once logged in, click on the Transcript button and you will see all your courses. You can then click Download next to the Certificate you wish to view.
Please note that you must choose the Print function as the certificate will not print with the save image as or copy image functions.
Candidates failing to achieve a passing score of 70 will be eligible for re-examination. Re-examinations are permitted within 6 months of initial course completion. Course must be retaken if re-exam is requested more than 6 months after initial course. Re-examination requires the submittal of a re-examination form and fee. Those needing to schedule a re-examination should contact the Training Provider for assistance. Those failing the exam for the third time will be required to retake the course.
What is the cost for a Re-Exam?
The cost for a re-exam is $135.00. Click here for the Re-Exam Request Form.
Students with Special Needs

If a student identifies themselves as having a special need and requests accommodation, Training Providers should request appropriate and recent documentation of the disability. Training Providers must agree to provide reasonable accommodations. If the student and class sponsors disagree on the reasonable accommodations necessary, Training Providers should engage in (and document) a dialogue with the student.
Students who take one of NTS’s online core courses must take and pass a proctored examination to receive validation of the training. This validation is used to attain licensing or for the course to be used for certification. ESA/NTS uses ProctorU to proctor our exams. ProctorU is an online proctor available 24 hours a day.
All of our exams except for the Certified Fire Alarm Designer exam and Texas Residential Fire Alarm course exam are open book.
Upon completion of the online course students will receive an email confirming they have completed the online course. NTS will also be notified that the student completed the course.
Instructions for scheduling the Proctored Exam will be sent to the student via email and are available within the Proctored Exam on their learning portal.
You can retake an online course as many times as you would like within the twelve-month timeframe that the course is valid. Instructor led courses can only be retaken if you register and pay for the course again.
