Most recently, though, AIREF took a step into the world of multi-media by providing significant funding for the Security Industry Alarm Coalition (SIAC) of a video that demonstrates the high level of cooperation and support between law enforcement and the security industry. Working from a $25,000 AIREF grant, SIAC has created a video that educates police officers and sheriffs about best practices in alarm management. The 12-minute video provides insight and testimonials from a number of current and former law enforcement professionals, and makes it clear that there is a highly effective strategy for dealing with the issue: carefully crafted ordinances based on proven solutions created jointly by law enforcement, the security industry and the public working closely together.The video is available for viewing at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kCTAaOiOcM. Additionally, DVD’s are available from SIAC at www.siacinc.org.Overall, it stresses the importance of a well thought-out local strategy. As a cornerstone, it outlines the Model Alarm Ordinance, developed by SIAC in conjunction with law enforcement authorities throughout North America. The model ordinance stresses best practices, such as:Alarm registration and user education. Strict enforcement, including potential fines for alarm abusers and a limit on free responses. Two-call verification to cut down on the number of false dispatches. Making best use of the latest technology, including CP-01 control panels. In the video, Chief Dan Flynn of the Marietta (Georgia) Police Department notes that SIAC is a natural rallying point for law enforcement in developing effective ordinances, since it represents all major segments of the industry.
