Remembering Don Childers: A Dedicated Leader, Instructor, and Champion of the Electronic Security & Life Safety Industry
The Electronic Security Association (ESA) community is saddened by the passing of Don Childers, a respected industry leader, mentor, and long-time contributor to ESA and the National Training School (NTS). Don’s legacy is one of service, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to strengthening the people and professionalism of the electronic security and life safety industry.
Don was widely admired for his dedication to advancing the industry through education and leadership. Over the course of his career, he played an important role in shaping ESA’s direction while also helping develop generations of industry professionals.
Among his many contributions, Don served on the ESA Executive Committee as Vice President, where he provided thoughtful leadership and guidance during a pivotal time for the association. His voice at the leadership table reflected both deep industry knowledge and a genuine concern for the long-term health of the profession.
Don was also the recipient of ESA’s Sara E. Jackson Memorial Award.  Named after ESA’s former president, this prestigious award recognizes and honors an ESA member’s work on an association committee, task force, or board. The award reflects the character and commitment that defined Don throughout his career.
Perhaps where Don made the most lasting impact was in the classroom. As a long-time instructor with ESA’s National Training School, Don dedicated countless hours to educating and mentoring technicians and professionals across the country. His passion for teaching and his ability to connect with students earned him the distinction of ESA Instructor of the Year, a recognition bestowed by those who experienced his commitment firsthand.
Those who knew Don remember not only his knowledge, but also his generosity with his time and his willingness to help others succeed. He believed deeply in investing in people, and many professionals in our industry credit Don with helping launch or strengthen their careers.
Don Childers’ contributions to ESA and the electronic security industry will not be forgotten. His influence lives on through the many individuals he taught, mentored, and inspired over the years.
On behalf of ESA and the entire community of industry professionals, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Don’s family, friends, and colleagues. We are grateful for the legacy he leaves behind — one defined by leadership, service, and a commitment to excellence.
