Springs Student Awarded $1,000 Scholarship by Electronic Security AssociationStudent and Family Honored for Community Service Commitment
Irving, Texas, May 25, 2010 – Amanda Watson, a senior at William J. Palmer High School in Colorado Springs, was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the Electronic Security Association through the Youth Scholarship Program.
In 1996, the Electronic Security Association (ESA) launched the Youth Scholarship Program to promote goodwill among the electronic systems industry and police and fire officials by providing college scholarship awards to their deserving sons or daughters. Both ESA and its Chartered Chapter Associations participate in the program. The first place winner of each state’s program is automatically considered for the national ESA Youth Scholarship Program awards. Students who reside in states without a chartered ESA chapter or in a state with a non-participating state association submit their applications directly to ESA. From these applications, one is chosen to compete against the state winners as the national nominee. The national nominee is awarded a $1,000 scholarship to honor that individual’s achievement.
Amanda (hi-res photo) was chosen as this year’s national nominee from more than 60 applicants and finished fourth overall, the highest finish ever by a national nominee. Amanda will graduate in the top 15 percent of her class of 349 students. She is deeply involved in community service, being chosen as one of the 2008-2009 Mayor’s 100 Teens, a program that recognizes teenagers who demonstrate a commitment to volunteerism, leadership and academic success. She was also awarded the Canine Good Citizen award from the American Kennel Club for her efforts in rescuing and training a black lab mix to be a therapy dog.
Amanda’s father, William Watson, is an officer with the Colorado Springs Police Department. In her essay she wrote about what it means to have her father serving her community. “It means that, for the last seventeen years of my life, I have been able to model my views of what it means to be a contributing member of society off of the best role model out there, and it means that, as I look towards college, I have a better idea of where I stand in life than I ever could have hoped for otherwise. If someone really wanted to know what it means to me to have my padre involved in helping to security the community, all of these things and more could be summed up in three simple words: it means everything.”
If you would like to interview Amanda or her father, please contact ESA Communications Specialist Jason Smith at (888) 447-1689 or [email protected].
