Gatlinburg Student Receives National Scholarship AwardElectronic Security Association Honors Student and Family for Community Service Commitment
Irving, Texas, May 25, 2010 – Kristian Maples of Gatlinburg, Tenn. was recently awarded second place in the Electronic Security Association Youth Scholarship Program and received a $2,500 scholarship.
In 1996, the Electronic Security Association (ESA) launched the Youth Scholarship Program to promote goodwill among the electronic systems industry and police and fire officials by providing college scholarship awards to their deserving sons or daughters.
An active senior at Gatlinburg-Pittman High School, Kristian (hi-res photo) is editor of the school’s yearbook, Honors Anatomy and Physiology team captain, vice president of the Interact Club, student body vice president, president of the Beta Club, a youth mentor, and a volunteer at Sevier County Food Ministry, Ft. Sanders Sevier Medical Center, Heritage Day at Pittman Center Elementary, United Way Christmas Tree Auction and the Rotary Christmas gift-wrapping and party.
Kristian’s father, Jimmy Maples, is captain of the Gatlinburg Police Department. In her essay, Kristian wrote, “My dad’s tough policeman personality is very impressive, but he has another side that I find just as heroic. Aside from being an officer, he is a marriage counselor, a wedding minister, a Sevier County constable, a chaplain for the Fraternal Order of Police, and a charter member of the Sevier County Marine Corps League. He has also been a youth pastor, and a commander of the American Legion Post 202. My dad has proved to me that being ‘busy’ is not an excuse when it comes to helping people.â€
The ESA Youth Scholarship Program is a multi-tiered program that requires students first apply through their local Chartered Chapter Association. The winners from each participating Chartered Chapter Association, along with one national nominee from a non-participating state, compete for national awards of $7,500 for first place and $2,500 for second place. This year, 14 Chartered Chapter Associations participated, an increase of two states over last year. Kristian was selected second overall out of more than 680 applicants nationwide. In addition to her national award, Kristian received a $1,000 scholarship from the local chapter, the Tennessee Burglar & Fire Alarm Association. Altogether, ESA and its participating Chartered State Associations awarded $41,000 in scholarships this year to 29 winners.
If you would like to interview Kristian or her father, please contact ESA Communications Specialist Jason Smith at (888) 447-1689 or [email protected].
